In its latest deal, the company purchased 325,000 hectares of what the Tanzanian government called “unutilized” land in the Kagera region, the same place where the Burundian refugees have been making their homes since 1972. It is unclear what is meant by “unutilized”; the Katuma community is now made up of some of the most productive farmers in Tanzania. Despite any short-term benefits that might be gained from the purchase of this land by AgriSol, its long-term detrimental impacts on both the region’s ecosystem and its people outweighs any positive impact it may have.
